Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss leads the SEC with 275.1 yards per game and has 22 total touchdowns this season. Chambliss's reputation precedes him as the Rebels host Auburn in Oxford, Mississippi, this Saturday.
Coach Alex Golesh broke down the granular details of why Chambliss is so good in anticipation of the matchup.
As Golesh notes, it's all about Chambliss's footwork. Chambliss's ability to never appear rattled or let it get "hectic" in the pocket, Golesh says, comes from his feet.
"Feet, you always watch a quarterback’s feet and say, 'That dude knows what’s going on,' or 'he’s panicked.' His feet and are always right, and that’s what’s really, really impressive," Golesh said on Wednesday (h/t Montgomery Advertiser).
"There's never a panic. His feet are always set. When he's moving, feet are always set. There’s really no panic. That's the part that stands out. Looks like a veteran guy, and obviously, he is."
Trinidad Chambliss is the best quarterback Auburn will face this year
Golesh likely understands that no matchup this year poses a greater challenge behind center than Chambliss. It sounds like it, at least based on his assessment.
With the Rebels down starting running back Kewan Lacy, the pressure will be on Chambliss to compensate through the air.
Chambliss has not had a game under 200 yards passing this season yet, so, on paper, he should be expected to. The Tigers' pass rush hasn't generated consistent pressure, ranking in the middle of the conference in sacks at No. 6. Auburn's secondary is giving up 250.9 passing yards per game.
Granted, Auburn has eight interceptions split evenly between the secondary and defensive front. Maybe Chambliss could make a mistake or two. He does have seven interceptions, with three coming against Texas this past Saturday.
Still, the Tigers are not going to see a more poised passer all season than Chambliss. In fact, with Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor injured, Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell is the only other true threat Auburn plays in the final five weeks.
If the Ole Miss game doesn't go the Tigers' way, Chambliss will almost certainly be the reason.
