Around the world of college football, the SEC is well known as the most elite conference in the nation for its strength of schedules, rivalries, and cut-throat competition. Year in and year out, SEC teams sit at the top of the rankings and make their way to the College Football Playoffs.
With the CFP's expansion last year, teams that wouldn't typically get the opportunity to make a run for a championship were thrown in the mix like SMU and Arizona State, and both teams had former Auburn football offensive coordinators on their staffs.
But only three SEC teams made the cut in last year's expanded playoff, and for once, Alabama was not one of them. SMU head coach and former Auburn football offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee recently took the stage at ACC media days and let the world know he was tired of the same old SEC narrative.
“The SEC has had the same six schools win the championship since 1964. Not a single one has been different since 1964,” Lashlee said at ACC football media days, per On3. “That’s top-heavy to me. That’s not depth.”
Lashlee's comments infuriated Paul Finebaum, who then shared his take on the coach's rant.
“Do you know what happened at SMU?" Finebaum said, per Auburn Wire. "They shut the program down. While he’s making fun of the SEC for winning national championships all over the place. SMU is the most corrupt program in the history of college football. Rhett Lashlee has the nerve to get up there and throw stones? By the way, he played at Arkansas. That should have nothing to do with it. That was one of the most comically embarrassing rants I have heard and I am glad the audio wasn’t clear because I would have come right through that screen.”
