Kyle Whittingham's NFL minor leagues prediction not given much credence
Lawless Republic's Calvin Barrett doesn't believe Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham's prediction of a 32-team NFL minor league super conference has much merit -- labeling it as nothing more than a prediction and not a substantiated report of any kind.
"think we're all a bit tired of conference realignment and find it hard to see an end to the shakeup, but this 'NFL Minor League' prediction is just that: a prediction," Barrett wrote.
Whittingham touted the supposed college football super league as something that'd be a great benefit to any school involved.
"I think there is a major realignment coming, and it'll be a big one," Whittingham said to Oregon-based sports journalist John Canzano. "I think it will create even more of a divide and exclusivity for the teams that are on the right side of that line. 20 months to four years? How about that for a time frame? In my opinion, it's going to look very much like an NFL minor league."
NFL minor leagues would include most of the SEC
If this super conference comes to fruition, it'll be an SEC-heavy operation. As longtime college sports radio host Greg Swaim reports, every SEC school but Vanderbilt would be included. No other conference would have such minimal losses.
No region would benefit more from this scenario than SEC country. Having multiple NFL minor league teams in states like Alabama and Mississippi would bring an economic boon to states that badly need it.
College football outside of the South, Midwest, and West Coast would suffer in this scenario, but you get what you give. Those regions have been carrying the sport for years anyway; with an emphasis on the South and Midwest.
It's comforting to know that even in the most radical realignment scenarios, the SEC would basically remain as is, but with a few extra marquee opponents from the opposite "conference."
