With many of last year's defensive starters gone, who is stepping up at the safety position?

Auburn football is well into spring practice with only a couple of weeks until the A-Day spring scrimmage game. With multiple new staffers, including new coordinators on both sides of the ball, the program has been tasked with a lot of work throughout the offseason.

With many of last year's defensive starters gone heading into the 2024 season, there is plenty of competition, especially in the Tigers' secondary, which has lost DJ James, Nehemiah Pritchett, and Jaylin Simpson.

Several members of the safety position group are already stepping up, according to Auburn Rivals. Head coach Hugh Freeze has been particular impressed with Texas transfer Jerrin Thompson, who made his way to the Plains after four years with the Longhorns.

“Love his energy. Love his knowledge of the game,” said AU coach Hugh Freeze. “He knows all three spots back there. He’s been a leader and he hasn’t been here long. He’s vocal. He’s played at a high level at a good program. I think he’s going to be really invaluable for us back there being able to play multiple positions and help lead us.”

Co-defensive coordinator Charles Kelly said that the biggest thing they are focusing on right now is having the players learn the new system and understand the way things are done, but he has already seen flashes of greatness from several freshman additions.

“What we try to focus on right now, is don’t worry about those results. Just worry about getting better every day,” said Kelly of the newcomers. “I think some of the new guys have come in, Kaleb Harris, Kensley (Faustin) — those guys have flashed. They’re like sponges.”

The Tigers have three spring practices this week, and Pro Day will take place on Friday. A-Day is April 6.
