Auburn's 2028 recruiting class is about to get its first commitment, and judging by every post on X, along with On3's Jeffrey Lee, I think it’s going to be a good one. Sam Sollie, a three-star quarterback out of Gadsden City, announces his college decision today, and just about every signal points to the Plains.
Sollie is choosing between five SEC programs, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, and Mississippi State, after narrowing his list down last month. Auburn's forecast has skyrocketed to a 94% chance of landing him according to Rivals' Prediction Machine, a number that jumped after Rivals analyst Steve Wiltfong gave his prediction favoring the Tigers. It also doesn't hurt that Sollie himself has told SI’s Brooks Crew that Auburn is "100%" trending toward the top of his board.
It's easy to see why the Tigers have separated themselves from everyone else who offered him a scholarship. Sollie has taken four visits to Auburn dating back to 2025, more than any other program on his list. That kind of repeated interest tends to matter more with quarterbacks than almost any other position, especially since the job is as much about building trust in a coaching staff and offensive vision as it is about talent evaluation.
Sam Sollie already sounds like a Tiger at heart
At 6-foot-3, Sollie has the frame college programs like to develop over multiple years, and being a 2028 prospect means Auburn would get a long runway to build him into their plans at the position. Landing a quarterback that early in a class is always a priority for programs trying to establish an identity, and it's especially notable given Golesh is still assembling his first full recruiting cycle from scratch. Auburn currently has zero commitments in the 2028 class, so this would be the first domino to fall.
Signing with Auburn would also be something of a dream come true for Sollie, an Alabama native who has already said, “I want to be an Auburn Tiger.”
Yes, that makes it easier when your recruit already likes your program.
If/when Sollie picks Auburn today, as mentioned, he becomes the first commitment of the Tigers' entire 2028 cycle, which matters beyond just the name on the pledge. First commitments often set a tone, becoming the guy other in-state and regional targets look at when choosing whether a program is building something real.
