Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay was accused by several on social media after the 2026 NFL draft's first round of not being pleased that his team took Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Ty Simpson with the No. 13 overall pick.
Per Underdog Director Hayden Winks, "I just watched the entire Rams presser, and I can't say Sean McVay was showing a ton of excitement about the Ty Simpson selection. Said he will compete with Stetson Bennett for the QB2 job. Not a bunch of smiles. Les Snead was way more fired up."
Per journalist Landon Buford, "Sean McVay looks like Jason Kidd in Cleveland sitting next to former Mavs GM Nico Harrison during the press conference right after the Luka Doncic trade for Anthony Davis!"
Per FOX Sports' Kev Mahserejian, "Rams just pulled a Lance/Shanny on McVay but instead of giving up assets for a high upside QB prospect/mystery, they drafted a low upside QB he doesn’t believe in ... This is potentially franchise crippling if he wants out soon and it solely falls on that loser Less Snead."
Many observations of McVay's body language at the post-draft press conference told a similar story. McVay couldn't seem to be able to hide his disappointment in how his team used its first-round pick in what could be Matthew Stafford's final NFL season.
Sean McVay gives vague update on Matthew Stafford's future
McVay didn't have much to say about Stafford's recent contract negotiations that have yet to extend his contract beyond the 2026 season. Per FOX Sports' Jay Glazer, "Rams are drafting QB Ty Simpson with the 13th pick. Sean McVay actually told Matthew Stafford today of their decision and made it clear it’s for whenever Stafford decides to move on."
Will Simpson's presence make Stafford feel a certain way about not getting help in the draft at key skill positions or even in the offensive trenches? Will Stafford want to help groom his eventual replacement?
If the answer to the latter question is no, and for the former, it's yes, then it's hard to see both of these QBs in the room for too long.
