Week 8 effectively ended Auburn's CFP hopes. LSU was victorious on the Plains, 38-17, and the final score was kinder to Auburn than most of the 60 minutes were.

Elsewhere around the conference, Texas was able to keep its current regime together for at least another week, eking out a 34-27 win over Ole Miss in Austin. The Rebels host Auburn next week with their own CFP hopes on the line.

Finally, the quietest big news of the day in the SEC might've been Kentucky knocking off Vanderbilt and nabbing the top record in the conference right before Halloween. It's a scary thought how quick the rebuild has been in Lexington, relative to how long it's taken for Auburn to even win seven games in a season.

After a much less exciting week than last, this is the SEC's power rankings post-Week 8:

No. 1: Kentucky

Heading into November, the Wildcats have seven wins and one loss. Kentucky is loving the Will Stein era, where it is no longer a basketball school but a football school.

No. 2: Georgia

While Georgia was on a bye, the Bulldogs are still a top team despite the Auburn loss. The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party awaits in Week 9 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Halloween.

No. 3: Alabama

Alabama struggled a bit with Texas A&M but turned on the gas in the second half and kept the game out of reach. The Crimson Tide's defense may hold it back, because offense is certainly not the problem in Tuscaloosa.

No. 4: Florida

Florida is coming off the Longhorns win and the bye week, but will essentially have a road game in Atlanta against UGA this coming weekend.

No. 5: LSU

LSU got back in the win column at Auburn's expense, but has a tough November, with Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee standing in the way of a CFP berth.

No. 6: Texas

The Longhorns got a badly needed win against Ole Miss, but Arch Manning was nearly pulled for former Saraland star KJ Lacey. Things nearly imploded on the Forty Acres for Manning and Steve Sarkisian on Saturday night after nearly blowing a 21-point lead.

No. 7: Ole Miss

Losing to Texas isn't a resume killer, but the Rebels now have to beat the Dawgs in two weekends if they even survive Auburn.

No. 8: Tennessee

The Volunteers gave up the high ground in the conference and have fallen into the large bucket of two-loss teams. Kentucky awaits after the bye week to potentially end Tennessee's CFP hopes for good.

No. 9: South Carolina

With all the drama in Columbia, South Carolina, this season, you'd think Shane Beamer's Gamecocks would be on life support. Meanwhile, USC has a two-game winning streak over Florida and Tennessee. A strange year for the Cocks, for sure.

No. 10: Missouri

Missouri had its bye week. The Battle Line Trophy game against Arkansas looms on Halloween night in Fayetteville.

No. 11: Oklahoma

Defeating Mississippi State gives Oklahoma a nice boost after losing to the Wildcats last weekend.

No. 12: Auburn

Auburn was thoroughly dominated in a game that Alex Golesh felt had no silver lining. There's no rest for the weary, as a desperate Ole Miss is next.

No. 13: Arkansas

The Hogs are coming off a win, albeit against the loneliest team in the conference, the Commodores. Beat Mizzou next weekend, and Arkansas will need to be taken seriously.

No. 14: Mississippi State

What was once a nice story has become the same old, same old in Starkville. 4-0 has quickly become 4-3.

No. 15: Texas A&M

The Aggies had a nice first half against the Tide, but Texas A&M's passing game improvement isn't enough to drag this program out of the cellar.

No. 16: Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt remains winless in the SEC. The Commodores are back at the bottom and could be there a while.
