Tuesday, September 23, is turning out to be a big day for Auburn fans and college football fans throughout the SEC.
On Wednesday, it was reported that the conference will announce each school's three permanent opponents with the introduction of a nine-game SEC schedule starting in 2026. Now, more news is coming out that Auburn and the 15 other schools will find out their entire conference schedule for the next four seasons.
No dates for the matchups will be announced, but it is interesting that Hugh Freeze and the Tigers will find out who they will be playing as far in advance as 2029. In the past, schools typically found out a year in advance who they would play in the SEC, but now teams will know for quite some time. This will help fans who want to make road trips to places they enjoy or have never been before.
After four years, the SEC will review each school's permanent opponents. As Chris Low reports, the permanent opponents are being selected via the following criteria:
"Two priorities in selecting the three annual foes were protecting traditional rivalries and competitive fairness, meaning Alabama-Auburn and Florida-Georgia aren’t going away. The three annual foes will be reassessed every four years. Best part is each school will play every other SEC school at least once every two years."
Auburn will definitely face the Crimson Tide every season, while protecting the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry with Georgia would make sense.
