Four SEC teams are seen as locks to make the College Football Playoff. Two more apparently still have a chance to make the 12-team field, even though one of them already has three losses with two games to play.
According to USA Today's Erick Smith, the TAMU Aggies, Georgia Bulldogs, Ole Miss Rebels, and two-loss Alabama Crimson Tide are locks to make the field, while the two-loss Oklahoma Sooners could join them soon, and even the three-loss Texas Longhorns can get enough help to make it too.
"The league should hoover up the other four available spots. The champion and three of those positions should come from Texas A&M, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama. Oklahoma is wins against Missouri and LSU away from joining that group. The Sooners bumped out Texas this week. The preseason No. 1 now with three losses needs a lot of help to make the field," Smith wrote.
Of course, there are plenty of assumptions here. One is that the Rebels won't lose to the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the Egg Bowl. That might be an eliminator for Ole Miss, especially if Lane Kiffin leaves before the CFP.
Another is Alabama winning the Iron Bowl against the Auburn Tigers. With interim head coach DJ Durkin leading the charge for a 6:30 PM CT start time under the lights at Jordan-Hare Stadium, that game might not be set in stone for the Tide like many are assuming.
Finally, there's the idea that Texas can still make the CFP with three losses. That would more likely happen had their loss to UGA been with more dignity, and their loss to the 3-7 Florida Gators been to the Vanderbilt Commodores or Oklahoma Sooners instead. As their record stands, they don't deserve to be anywhere near the playoff.
Where does that leave us? Well, with two weeks left to play and questions that will go unanswered until we see how the final regular season standings shake out.
Just as we always are in mid-November.
