Entering the season, Oklahoma transfer Jackson Arnold had a ton of questions surrounding his QB skills. And now, just one week into the season and a 34-28 win over Baylor later, he is already making rounds in the Heisman Trophy prospects list.
USA Today's For The Win's Tyler Nettuno graded Arnold at the 7th place with +2000 odds, alongside DJ Lagway and Dante Moore, in his Week 2 Heisman candidates list.
"Arnold, meanwhile, led Auburn to a road win over Baylor in his Tigers debut," Nettuno wrote. "While he threw for just 108 yards, he ran for 137 on 16 carries and scored twice with his legs."
It's a given that Arnold still has a long way to go before reaching even the top 5 of the Heisman list and compete with the top candidates like LaNorris Sellers and Garrett Nussmeier.
Interestingly, Arnold's replacement at Oklahoma, QB John Mateer, is also on the list and ranked higher than Arnold, for that matter.
"A game against Illinois State only means so much, but Mateer impressed in his first outing at Oklahoma. He completed 30 of 37 passes for 392 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score with his legs," Nutteno wrote about Mateer, ranking him as No. 5.
Auburn still has two games before it finally kicks off its SEC schedule; that's the squad's litmus test.
To make it even spicier, Auburn's first SEC matchup will be against Oklahoma. More particularly, it will be the moment of truth for Arnold as he will do everything to win against his former team, with whom he performed terribly last year, and not let them have the last laugh on him.
Brent Venables' Sooners will await to face off the revamped and formidable looking Tigers at the OU Memorial Stadium later this month on Sept. 20.
