The Auburn Tigers football team has landed its first commit from the transfer portal, and for the new coaching staff, it's a familiar face. USF transfer quarterback Locklan Hewlett has announced his commitment to the Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

Hewlett committed without visiting the Plains, knowing he wanted to continue playing for his former coach, Alex Golesh. He is the first commit for the Tigers and Golesh out of the transfer portal.

From St. Augustine, Florida, Hewlett first signed with South Florida as a 3-star recruit in the class of 2025. He played in two games as a true freshman, recording seven completed passes for 90 yards and one touchdown.

USF Quarterback Migration

Hewlett is one of two former South Florida quarterbacks that is expected to be on the roster for the Tigers next season. Byrum Brown, the Bulls' starter, is visiting the Plains this weekend and it has been widely reported that Auburn is the only school to watch for the senior QB.

After all three of Auburn's quarterbacks hit the transfer portal, the room will have to be completely rebuilt by Alex Golesh and his staff, and it's likely that the Tigers will take one more portal quarterback in addition to Hewlett and Brown, should he choose Auburn. Also on the roster is freshman signee Rhys Brush, a 3-star quarterback in the class of 2026.

With the NCAA's new transfer rules, the only transfer portal window is open from Jan. 2 through Jan. 16, even for graduate transfers.
