Auburn football has made a slew of new hires, but they can make the fanbase happy by retaining Travis Williams.
House-clearing was needed for Auburn football this offseason. Gus Malzahn was no longer the man to lead the charge after seemingly admitted his heart was not into winning National Championships any longer by saying 6-4 was a “solid season.”
Kevin Steele was definitely not to be retained after the stunt he pulled trying to overtake Malzahn and be the locker-room leader. Leaders don’t backstab. LSU can have him.
That said, with Bryan Harsin now installed as the man in charge of bringing the Tigers back to true national relevance beyond beating Alabama once every other year and losing to UCF and the University of Minnesota in bowl games.
Early betting odds actually gave his Auburn football squad the 16th best chances of winning the National Championship in 2022:
Harsin has built an impressive coaching staff early on, leaning on past underlings while also retaining key Auburn support staff.
Jeff Pitman, Spencer Danielson, and Jeff Schmedding were all brought on from Boise State while Cadillac Williams was kept as the lone holdover from Malzahn’s staff. Schmedding’s addition as linebacker coach seemed to have taken Travis Williams out of the running for a spot on Harsin’s staff.
But it’s important to note that Schmedding will only be coaching inside linebackers. Williams could be kept on to be the outside linebackers coach, as friend of Fly War Eagle Jake “JBoy” Crain pointed out:
Please, Auburn football…
