Auburn football has officially added the seventh commit to their recruiting class of 2022 after Damari Alston announced he would be continuing his football career on the Plains. While adding more depth to the roster is always a good thing, Alston’s pending arrival makes the 2021 season that much more important for incoming freshman Jarquez Hunter.

Hunter signed with the Tigers on February 5 and has already made a big impression with the coaches during the offseason, earning the Iron Man of the Week award early on. He put up extremely impressive numbers during his final high school season, per Auburn Wire:

"The former Mississippi Mr. Football ran for 1,687 yards along with 22 touchdowns. He had 2,069 all-purpose yards as a senior. His 93 career touchdowns are a Mississippi Class 5A record."

SEC insider Jake Crain of The JBoy Show even went so far as to say that Jarquez Hunter is already the second-best running back on the Tigers’ roster. Hunter is making strides ahead of his freshman season on the Plains, but if he wants to continue to be an impact player for Auburn he’ll have to earn it because Damari Alston is right on his heels.

Alston has made it clear in past interviews he intends to play as soon as possible, and he sees the opportunity to make an early impact with the Tigers:

"“One thing with me, I want to come in and I want to play early,” Alston said. “I’m not trying to sit and wait until my junior or senior year to, you know, tough the rock. I feel like I’m a good player.”"

Alston’s decision to commit to Auburn football indicates that he expects to be playing when he arrives on the Plains, where he’ll be joining Tank Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter. Assuming Shaun Shivers won’t use his extra COVID year to play another season at Auburn, Alston could take on the role that Jarquez Hunter will fill in 2021 while Hunter moves up to replace Shivers.

Auburn football is well on its way to further establishing a legacy of powerhouse runningbacks.
