After another tough road loss for Auburn basketball, many fans weren’t sure what to expect from the new AP Poll Rankings. The Tigers held on to the #1 spot for three weeks before dropping down to #2, and just this morning fell another spot to #3.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs are still at the front of the pack, emerging as a unanimous #1 in this week’s poll. The Arizona Wildcats moved up to #2, the team’s highest ranking in four years, after recent wins over Oregon State and Oregon.

Auburn basketball comes in at #3 after beating Vanderbilt and losing on the road to Florida, and the top five finish up with Purdue at #4 and Kansas at #5, pushing the Kentucky Wildcats back to the #6 spot.

Gonzaga hasn’t lost a basketball game since early December, and they aren’t likely to drop in the polls with the way they’ve been dominating their conference schedule. Fortunately for the Zags, they don’t have to face SEC powerhouses every week as Auburn does.

Still, with Auburn basketball spending another week in the top five of the AP Poll, they are getting very close to breaking the longest streak in program history:

However, achieving that won’t be a cakewalk for the Tigers. On Wednesday night, Auburn basketball will host OIe Miss in Auburn Arena, and then the team will have to head back out on the road to face the #4 team in the SEC in the Tennessee Volunteers.

The Vols took care of Kentucky last week before losing by 10 to Arkansas on Saturday. Their next opponent before taking on the Tigers will be Missouri on the road. Beating the Volunteers on their home turf could prove to be a challenge for Auburn basketball, but it would be an important win in securing the SEC title and maintaining their Top 5 status.
