By now, it is common knowledge that the wide receiver position is in serious need of added depth ahead of the 2022 Auburn football season. The Tigers lost two of their three most productive receivers, and most of the returning players have limited experience.

While the addition of Ike Hilliard to the coaching staff was certainly a boost to the position group, the Tigers are still expected to add new talent from the transfer portal. Recently, they have centered in on two former Texas Longhorns that hit the portal and could add the kind of experience the Tigers need to the roster.

The first of those two options is redshirt sophomore Kelvontay Dixon, who signed with Texas in the recruiting class of 2020 as a 4-star prospect. Dixon played in only three games as a freshman, but still accumulated 76 yards and a touchdown on three catches. However, he did not continue to flourish under the Longhorns’ new coaching staff and ended the 2021 season with nine receptions for 100 yards despite playing in 12 games.

With three years of eligibility left, a fresh start on the Plains could be exactly what Kelvontay Dixon needs to pick things back up.

Another former Longhorn the Tigers are likely to look into is senior Marcus Washington. He signed with Texas as a 4-star prospect in the class of 2019, and entered the transfer portal following the end of spring practice.

According to Horns 247, Washington was in the top group of receivers by the end of spring training, and was expected to play a key role in the Texas offense this fall. Washington started seven games in 2021, and caught 18 passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. If the Tigers can get him to commit to Auburn football, he would bring the exact kind of senior leadership and experience that position group needs for the upcoming season.
