Auburn football: 2 transfers currently trending to the Plains
This week, prospects all over the country who plan to sign during the early signing period will be getting in their last visits with coaches who’d like to have them play for their programs in college. With Hugh Freeze as the newly-hired head coach, the Auburn football coaching staff has been working hard to finish up strong.
Recruiting high school prospects is obviously important, but with the current situation on the Plains it’s no surprise that Hugh Freeze would expect to lean heavily on the NCAA transfer portal in his first year with the program to add talent and depth to the roster.
The Tigers will end up having a shot with several transfers, but these two names are currently trending up: Dont’e Thornton and Trace Ford.
Wide receiver Dont’e Thornton played two seasons with the Oregon Ducks before deciding to enter his name into the portal. During his time in Eugene, he racked up 26 catches for 541 yards and three touchdowns, and he will have three years to play at his next stop.
Thornton visited the Plains and met the new staff this past weekend, and left town with an offer from Auburn football secured. Although Penn State is also going after the receiver hard, Thornton is certainly a name to watch.
The other transfer trending toward the Plains is defensive end Trace Ford. The former Oklahoma State Cowboy officially visited last weekend, and had a great experience with Hugh Freeze and the other coaches. In fact, he enjoyed the visit so much that he named Auburn football as one of his top three programs alongside USC, Oklahoma, and SMU.
The DE has already been to Auburn and SMU and plans to visit USC and Oklahoma, but his decision will come sooner than later, per Auburn Live, and he intends to make a final decision quickly.
