Auburn football adds another transfer in former Sam Houston State edge Chris Murray

The Tigers added a big piece to the defense over the weekend with former Sam Houston State edge Chris Murray. He announced his decision via social media on Sunday and chose the Tigers over offers from other programs including Virginia and Florida State.

Murray began his career at TCU, signing with the Horned Frogs as a member of their 2021 class. A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, Murray was a 3-star defensive lineman out of high school. After one season at TCU, Murray hit the portal and transferred to Sam Houston State.

He appeared in only four games in the 2022 season, but appeared in nine games in the 2023 season and racked up 15 tackles and a sack. His breakout season was in 2024, when he played in 13 games and logged 35 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. He will spend his final year of eligibility at Auburn.

The 2024 first-team All-CUSA selection visited the Plains over the weekend and spent a lot of time meeting with the coaching staff. For Murray, relationships were key in his decision to commit to Auburn football.

"It's big to have the relationships, but also where I can contribute on the field," Murray said of why he chose Auburn, per Auburn Undercover. "Me being in their scheme and seeing that, I loved everything about it.

"This is the stop for me. This is the one. The biggest thing for me was the relationships and on top of the relationships, showing me that I can contribute in this defense. I know they can help me develop my skills. I've got work to do. I feel like trying to get to the next level, this is the place to do that."
