It's a new era. No more is the Auburn Tigers football program beholden to snow- and ice-themed hype videos inundated with "Freeze Warning" labels. It's the Deep South after all. It's clear that in East Central Alabama, the true "Freeze Warnings" were from those giving AU grief for having hired Hugh Freeze in the first place.
Auburn's latest hype video for the 2026 season, which didn't include any of the aforementioned pun allusions, was another sign of changing (and probably better) times, with Freeze having been fired last November and replaced with Alex Golesh.
All over X/Twitter, fans were celebrating the new/old marketing strategy of focusing on the campus and not one man's last name. Some fans never want to hear about freezing or snow on the Plains until there's another January 2025-esque snowstorm hitting the area. Enough of hearing that the team was "close" after embarrassing losses will do that.
It's hard not to empathize with the scorned fanbase. Freeze came to a hurting program and built up false hope with misleading recruiting results, only for the new coach to be forced to rebuild the offense from scratch.
It's no wonder Freeze hasn't found a coaching job anywhere, or even a broadcasting job like Brian Kelly got, if he's even looking. His Auburn stint left his own coaching career looking worse off than before. Freeze was a successful head coach with the Liberty Flames who began losing big in Lynchburg when his job interviews with the Tigers started in 2022. Now, his name is hardly brought up around college football anymore. I mean, the less said about his time with the Ole Miss Rebels, the better, but still.
Freeze may even have more of a future in golf. Just joking. Freeze definitely has more of a presence in golf these days than football, though.
Alex Golesh has a low bar to clear at Auburn in 2026
Having a record above .500 in his first season would make Golesh very popular in Lee County, Alabama. That's all he needs to do. Winning six regular games and then finally getting over the bowl game hump is a low bar in the grand scheme.
The bar would likely be raised very high by next year, but Auburn fans would love to have that problem. Climbing out of a five-year malaise of historic losing is the only thing required right now for Golesh to get a stamp of approval from most rational fans.
It's about bringing the feeling back. The Tigers have lost national relevance amid a broader restructuring of who's who in college football in the NIL era, and the product has simply not been all that entertaining by and large. The close games were largely overachievements on the defense's part in 2025.
Give Auburn something to believe in, and Golesh is set. Having that pressure off in what is typically a major pressure-cooker situation is a win for Golesh off the bat. So is Jimmy Rane pledging financial support for the football program under Golesh.
Golesh is in what is most commonly known as the catbird seat. Low expectations, but the runway to deliver high-profile wins.
