The Lane Kiffin saga was seemingly wrapped up. College football was almost able to move on to the other coaching searches around the league. Then, CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz revealed that the end of the road is still over a week away.
Not until after the Egg Bowl against the Mississippi State Bulldogs will there be clarity on Kiffin's next move, whether it be staying with the Ole Miss Rebels or making the leap to Baton Rouge to coach the LSU Tigers. The Florida Gators are practically out of the race at this point. But more on that later.
After it appeared LSU was a lock, Zenitz revealed from a source that Kiffin's recruitment is shaping up to be like that of a high school blue-chip prospect.
In other words: a surprise contender could emerge, and there could be a few more twists and turns before it's all said and done. Anything we've heard up until now might not matter in the slightest by next Saturday.
"While it is unlikely there will be definitive clarity before next Saturday, numerous sources with knowledge of the situation have told CBS Sports in the last 24 hours that they believe the momentum has shifted in LSU's favor to land the talented head coach. To be clear, that does not mean it's a done deal. Throughout the week, Kiffin has seemingly gone back and forth by the day while trying to make a decision. For example, there were multiple days this week that sources felt like it was trending toward Kiffin taking the job at LSU only for it to then come across the next day like he was giving real thought to staying at Ole Miss," Zenitz wrote.
Kiffin sure loves the limelight. He has folks on social media following his every post trying to decipher its meaning. Apparently, announcing his decision on one of the Week 14 pregame morning shows is on the table.
It's annoying for the fanbases involved, and the other ones with openings that are waiting for the Kiffin shoe to drop.
Seven more days of anxiety awaits several SEC teams' die-hard fanbases, all leading into the Thanksgiving holiday and rivalry week.
Here goes nothing.
