Lane Kiffin seems like the kind of person who never misses out on an opportunity, however remote, to crack a "that's what she said" joke. So when it came to addressing the "length and girth of the SEC", Kiffin had to chip in his take.
On his Wednesday presser, Auburn Tigers head football coach Hugh Freeze said something that probably any other head coach has never said: "You need length and girth in this league."
As NFSW as that sounds, in his defense, Freeze was referring how robust running backs have a better shot at saving the day when their offense is down in the trenches.
“I don’t really get hung up on the running backs’ weight, but it is good that you have some that have some girth to them,” Freeze explained. “There’s no doubt you need length and girth in this league up front, and at linebacker, too.”
Call it a double entendre gone wrong (or gone perfectly right), that phrase stuck around and made headlines more than the Tigers' fall camp updates. Kiffin's reaction to it only made the situation more hilarious.
Trolling without a direct jab is something Kiffin excels at, and Freeze gave him a perfect opportunity to put his talent to use. Kiffin replied with a simple facepalm emoji to Freeze's dialogue, communicating volumes without actually saying anything.
This classic Kiffin move comes right after the two had just concluded their sort of misunderstood exchange.
Freeze's golfing has also been making headlines for a while, enraging the fans from the Plains because of the Tigers missing the mark in recruiting cycle this year. Kiffin's seemingly simple, innocent "Game is on 🔥" comment was enough to tip off the jokes on Freeze.
The assumption of this being a ribbing attempt came from a video of Kiffin fishing, in which he particularly tagged Freeze. The fans were quick to catch on to the recruiting reference since the Tigers' coach was blasted for being busy at the golf course.
Of course, he cleared out the rumors during his media appearances, saying that both Auburn and Freeze were doing an amazing job, but it is easy to point out a tongue-in-cheek response after all that they have shared online.
By now, most head coaches know there is no winning against Kiffin in subtle online strikes which are just enough galling to get on their nerve. And the Ole Miss head coach looks like he is in no mood to stop in the near future.
