Auburn football wide receivers coach Marcus Davis opens up on the recruitment of Cam Coleman and his impact on the team so far

July 4, 2023, was a nasty shock for a lot of Auburn football fans. The Tigers' coaching staff had been working hard all year on the recruitment of 5-star wide receiver Cam Coleman, who seemed very locked in with Auburn and had only positive things to say about his relationship with the Tigers' WR coach Marcus Davis.

Then, in a surprise announcement, Coleman committed to Texas A&M. But the Tigers never swtiched up and never stopped recruiting Coleman, and when head coach Jimbo Fisher was fired the wide receiver's decommitment followed soon after. Marcus Davis says the coaching staff's commitment to pursuing Coleman was key in his decision to choose Auburn.

Head coach Hugh Freeze has said from the very beginning that Coleman makes the Tigers look different, especially after several years in which Auburn football has struggled to find highly productive receivers. Coleman stands out from the crowd in both size and athleticism, and Davis says there is no question about his level of talent but that's not the greatest thing about the young receiver .

The best thing I like about Cam Coleman is he wants to be coached. He’s super coachable,” Davis said, per AL.com. “He’s going to try to do exactly what you tell him to do. He loves football, so it’s easy coaching him because he wants the feedback. He’s coming to you before you can even get to him in terms of what he needs to do to get better. So it’s been a joy, so far, to coach him.”

Auburn football fans will get their first chance to see Cam Coleman in action on April 6 when the Tigers conduct their A-Day spring scrimmage game.
