Though they secured two wins over the weekend, there was no picture-perfect ending for Auburn baseball in the Jax College Baseball Classic. The unbeaten Tigers went up against the unbeaten Virginia Cavaliers in the final game of the tournament, and the Tigers ultimately fell 6-4.

“I thought the difference in the ballgame was that Virginia pitched a little bit better and then the two-strike hitting and two outs,” coach Butch Thompson said, per Auburn Undercover. “It seemed like there were two really good teams out there tonight. I thought their timely hitting, especially their two-strike hitting, was a little superior tonight. They pitched it a little bit better or was able to wiggle out of it a little bit better than us.”

Third baseman Deric Fabian noted that although the team is upset they lost, it was a great competition that will help them build for the future. The Tigers will next see action in Plainsman Park this Tuesday when they host Samford baseball.

On the flip side, it was a great weekend for Auburn basketball. The Tigers had a spectacular game against the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, with Auburn fans taking over the venue and creating a neutral environment if not homefield advantage for the team. Auburn basketball left Athens with a solid 97-76 victory.

Chad Baker-Mazara logged a career-high 27 points and KD Johnson, who transferred to the Plains from Georgia several years ago, had a big game as well. The show of Auburn dominance was enough to catch the attention of the AP voters, who moved the Tigers up to spot #11, three spots ahead of last week's #14 rank.
