Auburn Tigers News: Basketball lands SG Simon Walker, Cole Cubelic on AU's problem
In today's edition of Auburn Tigers News, Simon Walker commits to Auburn basketball and Cole Cubelic gives his take on Auburn football's problem
It was a big week for head coach Bruce Pearl and the Auburn basketball program. The Tigers picked up their first commit in the recruiting class of 2025 in 4-star shooting guard Simon Walker. The Huntsville native is ranked as the #2 recruit out of the state of Alabama and the #25 SG in his recruiting class.
Walker picked Auburn basketball over Virginia Tech and Iowa, and made his decision based on the strong relationships he has built with the Tigers' coaching staff over the past few years.
"I have really been able to grow a relationship with the coaching staff over the last couple of years and it's a little bit closer to home," Walker said, per Auburn Undercover. "My parents are big reason why I do the things I do and having them be able to come watch me means a lot to me. So, yeah, just the relationship with the coaching staff, the fit in the program, the overall environment and culture that Auburn brings was very intriguing."
Cole Cubelic gives his take on Auburn football's problem
Meanwhile, the Auburn football team is still struggling to fix their problems on the offense heading into their second SEC matchup of the season against Oklahoma. Head coach Hugh Freeze has held his cards close to his chest in terms of who will be the starting quarterback this Saturday, but former Auburn football player Cole Cubelic believes that the quarterbacks are not the issue on the Plains.
“I wouldn’t sit here and try to make people believe that quarterback play has been good, it hasn’t. But this is not a quarterback problem,” Cole Cubelic said, per AL.com. "It’s a collective offensive issue right now as to why they can’t continuously move the ball."
Cubelic went on to single out the poor blocking and blamed the wide receivers and tight ends for many of the issues plaguing the offense. But while those position groups may have work to do, the most glaring issue is undoubtedly the leader of the offense.
The Tigers will take on Oklahoma in Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
