Auburn Tigers News: Former Auburn CB headed to Houston, Hugh Freeze high on WR transfer
In today's edition of Auburn Tigers News, a former Auburn cornerback has transferred to Houston and Hugh Freeze thinks this WR is a 'home run'
The Auburn football team didn't have too many losses to the transfer portal over the offseason with most of their production being lost to the NFL Draft. 22 Tigers hit the transfer portal following the 2023 season, and earlier this week another one found their transfer destination.
According to Matt Zenitz, former Auburn cornerback JD Rhym is expected to transfer to Houston and reunite with former Auburn football coach Zac Etheridge, who currently coaches the Cougars' defensive backs.
Rhym was a member of the Tigers' recruiting class of 2022, and spent two seasons on the Plains during which he racked up 20 total tackles, one interception, and two passes deflected.
Hugh Freeze thinks this WR is a 'home run'
One of the biggest goals for head coach Hugh Freeze and his staff during this offseason was to revamp the wide receiver position group. Though the group has struggled with production over the last few seasons, new additions including experienced transfers and 5-star incoming freshman are expected to change that this year.
One of the transfers, KeAndre Lambert-Smith, was widely regarded as the best wide receiver in the transfer portal, and two weeks ago he committed to the Auburn Tigers. For Freeze, bringing in a highly productive receiver with four years of experience under his belt is a big deal in a position group stacked with young talent.
"You get a guy that has the experience that Dre has at the Power Five level to combine with those young kids I thought was a home run for us," Freeze said, per Auburn Rivals. "Y'all have been around since I've been here. We had to restructure that room. I hate saying it like that sometimes. But for what we want to do, we had to change that room."
