Auburn Tigers News: Hugh Freeze talks QB situation, OL week three ambitions
In today's edition of Auburn Tigers News, Hugh Freeze talks about the quarterback situation and the offensive line shares their game three ambitions
It was a rough game for starting quarterback Payton Thorne, to say the least, but was it enough for head coach Hugh Freeze to bench the fifth-year senior? Freeze has been hesitant to do so, but spent the week gently admitting a lot of the issues stemmed from the performance of the Auburn football quarterback.
During fall camp, redshirt freshman Hank Brown won the backup role, and fans have been clamoring for a switch all week. For most, watching a young quarterback with room to develop make mistakes is a lot more palatable than the alleged veteran QB. Despite his faith in Thorne, Freeze knows that the Tigers cannot keep losing games.
"After watching the film, there's a very, very short leash on us playing as poorly as we did," Freeze said, per Auburn Undercover. "... Hank's played well this week; obviously we've just had the one practice. I'm curious to see how they respond this week with the reps they're given, and continue to grade them out."
Offensive line shares their game three ambitions
With Izavion "Too Tall" Miller out for the New Mexico game, the Auburn football offensive line is switching things up again. Dillon Wade is expected to move to right tackle, and Tate Johnson will be moved up to replace him at left guard.
Veteran Jeremiah Wright believes that despite the shakeups, everything will work out just fine for the offensive line, and their main goal is to be better than they were against Cal.
"I want us to run the ball more. Be aggressive up front, move some people,” said Wright, per Auburn Rivals. “I kind of feel like we didn't move people like we should have … we came out against a tough team like Cal and didn't run the ball as much as I wanted to or the team wanted to.
“This week I feel like we'll run the ball more, be physical, knock people off the ball and just show people what we're capable of doing.”
