Former Alabama star Marlon Humphrey claimed it was "literally disgusting" to see gymnastics G.O.A.T. Simone Biles and her Olympic teammate Jordan Chiles give Brazilian gold medal-winner on the floor routine, Rebeca Andrade, a "we're not worthy" bowing pose at the podium.
Needless to say, fans from across the sports world weren't happy that Humphrey couldn't let a good thing go uncriticized after Andrade realized her Olympic dream despite previously suffering three ACL tears.
Some fans simply implored Humphrey to delete the disrespectful post.
Others went ad hominem with it and ripped Humphrey for his abilities on the field; the wrong approach considering Humphrey's long list of accolades.
As it turns out, it was Chiles' idea but Biles didn't hesitate when asked to honor Andrade.
Marlon Humphrey shows ignorance regarding women's gymnastics
Humphrey plays in a physical sport where players quite literally injure each other on nearly every play. Football doesn't see anything like this, though even when it does, it's rare to see a major sports voice call it "disgusting."
Women's gymnastics is as far from football as it gets in the sports world -- not from an athletics standpoint, but from a cultural one.
After every routine, whether it be the uneven bars, the floor, the vault, or the balance beam, there's a show of sportsmanship from the women participating. These girls aren't rivals, and even if they were, you'd never see it. Full support after a feat that can literally paralyze someone is the norm.
Humphrey missed the boat on this one. Even if that type of sportsmanship isn't customary in his world, it isn't something that deserves ridicule. Biles and Chiles were merely empowering their fellow competitor after a hard-earned gold medal.
Don't let anyone's opinion take away from the greatness displayed at the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
