I haven’t met Alex Golesh. In fact, I haven’t even asked him a question at a press conference or over the phone. For many reasons, I am staying away from the Auburn football coaching situation as much as I can as someone who covers the Tigers after going through some tough times. I think it is better for my coverage and for everyone involved.
However, watching the first-year Auburn head coach deal with this young kid, who is obviously an Alabama fan, at last week’s Regions Tradition Pro-Am, made me like him a lot.
I’m not sure how the Golesh tenure will work out, and I wrote about that when he was hired, but as an Auburn alum and fan, I’m certainly rooting for the guy to succeed. It’s been seemingly forever since I did some ramblings on Auburn sports, so I think it is time to spew out some random thoughts that have been building over the last several months. Off we go!
Rambling on the Auburn Tigers
- Jay Jacobs receives a lot of flak for how his time as Auburn’s athletic director turned out, but there’s no question that he made one of the best hires in school history when he signed Butch Thompson as Auburn’s head baseball coach back in 2015, following what was a horrific hire in Sunny Golloway.
- We’ve written about it a bit, but what Jackson Koivun has achieved in his three years at Auburn has to be among the most legendary in athletics’ history. The golfer is inevitable, and if he doesn’t win at least a couple of majors on the PGA Tour, I would be shocked.
- Back to baseball, but the fact that Auburn fans were disappointed the Tigers couldn’t pull off the sweep at Texas A&M this weekend shows how good this team is. It's 984 miles from the Plains to Omaha. The Tigers could be making that trek this June.
- Fans will most definitely need some rosters in their hands for the first few football games this fall, especially when the Tigers are on offense. If my prediction is correct, 10 out of the 11 starters will be newcomers.
- I’m really excited to see what the combination of Byrum Brown and Keshaun Singleton can achieve this season. I feel like it has a Ben Leard-to-Ronney Daniels type of chemistry, or at least Bo Nix-to-Seth Williams.
- Steven Pearl took his lumps this past year as the first-year head coach after his father’s departure, but it is great to see him putting together a solid roster that is full of size and length. That is exactly what Auburn was missing last season.
- The NCAA Tournament expanding to more teams doesn’t need to happen. Stay at the current number and let teams like this year’s Auburn team sit out and rue the fact that they blew their shot at making it in. Simple enough.
- Finally, since they asked, my vote for which SEC coach has the best swing starts with Pete Golding, then Kirby Smart. Nate Oats is dead last.
