SEC basketball news roundup: Dick Vitale rips Kentucky's schedule, 4-star ex-UGA and Texas target reclassifies

Damn Dickie V, tell us how you really feel...

It has been fairly quiet on the recruiting trail the last few days, with few commits announced across the "It Just Means More" conference in the 2027 cycle. With that said, it was far from a quiet stretch in the SEC realm.

Legendary ESPN college basketball analyst and former Detroit Mercy (then-University of Detroit) Titans and Detroit Pistons head coach Dick Vitale went scorched earth on the Kentucky Wildcats' 2026-27 non-conference slate. Meanwhile, a former blue-chip target of the Georgia Bulldogs and Texas Longhorns shut the door on both of them for good, reclassifying to the 2026 class with the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Here are the latest headlines from the SEC hoops world:

Dick Vitale says $21 million roster means Kentucky must schedule better

UK's schedule-makers were the object of Dickie V's ire on Tuesday. Vitale launched an unexpected attack on the Cats' non-conference schedule for the 2026-27 season and cited the team's $21 million roster. Look away, fans of the Manhattan Jaspers, James Madison Dukes, Northern Arizona Lumberjacks, Grambling State Tigers, Bryant Bulldogs, Sacred Heart Pioneers, and Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs.

"The Kentucky men's basketball team has many cupcakes on their pre conference schedule & 5 legit challenges - BBN -Cats fans & players deserve a more challenging schedule in getting ready for the SEC - especially having a TEAM with over 21 MILLION in NIL dollars," Vitale posted on X.

Dickie V has never been one to withhold his opinion. This was a scathing shot at Mark Pope and a Kentucky basketball brain trust that hopefully realizes that teams with at-large bid odds like the Wildcats don't need to be ducking top-tier competition. While the Auburn Tigers' snub from March Madness in 2026 is a good example of why schools schedule easier games, UK robbed fans of worthwhile early November action; unless, of course, any of the aforementioned mid-majors want to step up this winter and deliver an early-season shocker.

Ohio State's LJ Smith reclassifies, ends hope of a UGA or Texas flip

Elsewhere, Ohio State Buckeyes commit LJ Smith reclassified from the 2027 class to the 2026 class, meaning there won't be any more time for the Bulldogs and Longhorns to execute a flip. Ditto for the North Carolina Tar Heels, Indiana Hoosiers, and Kansas Jayhawks, all historic programs in their own right. OSU head coach Jake Diebler locked Smith's recruitment down and now has the 5-star Oak Hill Academy phenom for next season.

After Gus Johnson called out the Ohio State University on FOX airwaves in February for a lack of funding for basketball, it seems that leadership has plans to field competitive teams on the gridiron and hardwood. It's a tough loss for the Longhorns and Bulldogs, who could've used Smith to make a seventh and third NCAA Tournament, respectively. That said, it's a massive win for Diebler, who's looking to start up a March Madness streak himself with a second-straight appearance next year.
