SEC football news roundup: 4-star RB chooses LSU, but 5-star EDGE chooses Notre Dame instead

The LSU Tigers went 1/2 on big-name recruits' decisions on Tuesday. All in all, a pretty good day in Baton Rouge.

Tuesday was Baton Rouge day, because the LSU Tigers were the talk of the town on college football's recruiting trail. Lane Kiffin was able to nab a 4-star running back, but he, Ed Orgeron, Blake Baker, and Co. couldn't land a Pennsylvania-based 5-star EDGE.

Elsewhere, Kirby Smart's Georgia Bulldogs nabbed a defensive line recruit in the Fayetteville metro in North Carolina. UGA still sits outside the top 10 nationally for 2027, but there's clear momentum in the right direction from one of the best coaching staffs in the game.

Here are the latest headlines from the SEC:

LSU lands 4-star RB over Tennessee and South Carolina

We'll start with Kiffin's big win, 4-star Byrnes (SC) RB Tre Segarra's commitment. The Bayou Bengals beat out the South Carolina Gamecocks and Tennessee Volunteers. LSU followed up the commitment of 4-star Lansdale Catholic IOL Terrance Smith on Monday with the addition of an explosive back to run between the guards on Tuesday.

Segarra is a three-sport athlete who has strong hips from a wrestling career. That helps him keep his balance upon contact. A smart athlete who sees the field well, Segarra helps propel the Tigers' 2027 class into the top 30. Kiffin had plenty of work to do in the portal during his first offseason and is now starting to cook for next year.

Notre Dame edges LSU for 5-star EDGE

It wasn't all good news on Tuesday for LSU. The Tigers didn't land 5-star Downingtown East (PA) EDGE Abraham Sesay. Marcus Freeman's Fighting Irish did instead, moving up to the No. 5 spot in 247Sports' composite team recruiting rankings for the 2027 cycle.

It's a tough loss for LSU because Sesay is the perfect prototype for an edge rusher. Sesay bolts to the backfield with a lightning-quick first step. He's disruptive and physical, and once he gets in an SEC weight room, he will be a scary prospect. Coach O's Bayou charm didn't get the job done on the northeast kid. The Notre Dame pull was undeniable for the eastern PA prospect.

Georgia lands 3-star DL over South Carolina

The Dawgs landed 3-star St. Pauls (NC) defensive tackle Antwan McKoy on Tuesday, edging out the Gamecocks. South Carolina didn't have the most successful day on the trail, continuing a bad trend for Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer. Beating a regional rival is a nice bonus for Smart and Co.

Georgia added a fourth defensive lineman to the 2027 class. McKoy is the highest-ranked defensive lineman in the 2027 class so far and falls just outside of the top 50 at his position nationally. McKoy could play on either end but also in the middle. With that said, his best role is likely at the 3-technique position. Smart and Glenn Schumann's defense prioritizes versatility, so either way, McKoy has chosen an elite landing spot for anyone with an NFL dream.
