All eyes in the state of Alabama turned to Massachusetts when Bill Belichick drafted former Crimson Tide QB Mac Jones to the Patriots alongside Auburn football legend Cam Newton, and it seems as though the quarterback race is on leading up to the start of the season.

Jones made headlines recently with his first official photos as a Patriot, but this time the QB is in the news for the nickname given to him by Newton. Mike Reiss reports that Cam Newton, who is notorious for handing out nicknames to his teammates, has assigned Jones the name “Mac and Cheese.”

Mac Jones is only the latest teammate of Newton to receive a nickname, according to Reiss. Newton reportedly has names for over 30 of his teammates, including Stiddy (Jarrett Stidham), Doughboy (N’Keal Harry), and Gun Show (Gunner Olszewski).

Surely you’re thinking that this is the least creative nickname that Cam Newton could have possibly come up with, and football fans were quick to point out the fact on Twitter. While some fans were angry and called the nickname “petty,” others were quick to throw in their suggestions for Jones’ nickname:

Mac Jones was the first pick of the Patriots in the 2021 NFL Draft and joined two former Auburn football quarterbacks in New England. While Newton is the projected starter, many Pats fans are hoping to see Jones take the field this season.
