SEC football news roundup: UGA, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Mizzou take Ls on the recruiting trail

It was not a good Saturday for the SEC on the recruiting trail. The North Carolina Tar Heels, Washington Huskies, and Indiana Hoosiers got the three biggest commitments of the day, with SEC programs missing out on all three.

There will be better Saturdays for the Georgia Bulldogs, South Carolina Gamecocks, Vanderbilt Commodores, and Missouri Tigers, to say the least.

Here were the biggest headlines on the gridiron newswire yesterday:

UNC lands No. 1 WR in South Carolina over Gamecocks and UGA

We start with North Carolina's addition of 4-star Bluffton (SC) receiver Amare Patterson. While Bill Belichick has had a rough stretch on the trail and on the field since arriving in Chapel Hill, Bobby Petrino and Co. were able to reel in a blue-collar receiver who does his best work downfield after hauling in deep balls. Patterson could put on the burners and beat most defenders down the sideline.

Patterson joins a 2027 class that features Humble, Texas, quarterback product Noah Spinks. With that said, it may be Texas A&M Aggies transfer Miles O'Neill who ends up as Billy Edwards Jr.'s successor under center during Patterson's freshman year. Georgia and South Carolina take a big loss to an ACC school that may soon be a bigger problem than it's been on the trail in a long time, if Petrino can fix the Heels' offense.

Texas lands 5-star Plus+ CB, Alabama flips 4-star CB from Vanderbilt

4-star safety chooses Washington over Vanderbilt, ASU, and UCLA

The Washington Huskies got the biggest defensive commitment of the day with 4-star Corona Centennial (CA) safety Jaden Walk-Green. Vanderbilt, the Arizona State Sun Devils, and the UCLA Bruins all took the L here. Walk-Green is a smart player who could find himself on the field before long at a position that typically requires patience while learning schemes.

Walk-Green probably always preferred sticking on the West Coast, making ASU and UCLA more likely than the Dores. With that said, when Vanderbilt offers you the chance to go to the South's Harvard in the great city of Nashville, you at least have to listen.

Lane Kiffin promises a title as LSU lands 4-star RB and 5-star EDGE

Indiana lands 3-star CB over Missouri, Rutgers, and Louisville

Finally, we have the defending champion Hoosiers edging Mizzou, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights, and the Louisville Cardinals for 3-star Grimsley (NC) CB Ramir Harris-Dupree. Indiana is still outside the top 30 but is gaining ground in the 2027 high school cycle. All told, after the last of Curt Cignetti's James Madison Dukes transfers are gone, the Hoosiers will likely revisit the portal next January to replenish the roster.

Still, Harris-Dupree could outperform his national ranking because of his shutdown instincts. His athleticism will get him on the field quickly in Bloomington, but Harris-Dupree could establish a starting role, or at least a consistent rotational role, by year two because of his IQ. While Indiana isn't just buying every recruit in sight just yet, defensive coordinator Bryant Haines and CB coach Rod Ojong got a nice addition in one of the quieter portions of the college football offseason.
